I wrote to Nic Jenzen-Jones about it and he answered, several days’ ago: “These are definitely ZAB-2.5 submunitions. You can see all of the distinctive characteristics, including some of the bursting charges detonating. They are not illuminants as such, though thermite does burn rather brightly.”

I remarked that dropping illuminants like these (as I thought they were) was more a terror tactic than effective militarily. However, they are in fact incendiaries. But, even so, for an incendiary to work, it must fall inside a building – so, you have to blow the roofs off first! Nic answered, in effect, that Assad has been dropping just about anything and everything, including sea mines.
